   I think this depends how far into the future you are attempting to see. I don't believe in the lifespan of any of us here on Hub Pages, at this moment, will be around when and if fossil fuels are either depleted or entirely outdated.

   Its not a matter of if, its a matter of when. At the turn of the century Nichola Tesla invented what would have been free wireless power worldwide. By tapping in to the energy in the stratosphere. J.P. Morgan pulled the plug on funding, and demolished his invention once he realized there was nowhere to place a power meter in order to charge customers.

   Yes, renewable energy can and will replace fossil fuels. It is only a matter of the will to do so. We need strong government action, that sets minimum standards, provides guidelines for efficiency, offers strong tax credits to individuals and business to convert to renewable sources, to help stimulate demand and innovation.
   
   On the flip side, consumers must be well educated and accepting of the technologies - again, this will happen if the prices come into line.
   
   We are all economically motivated beasts and if we can save money by going clean we'll do it.

   yes i do. the problem is that there is no money in it for the wealthy because once you buy the product, you don't need to pay for anything after. with fuel, you have to continuously relace it so money is made hand over fist.

   I truly believe that it can, but it well take a lot of fossil fuel to make that jump. Making things such as wind turbines requires lots of energy, which must come from oil and natural gas. There isn't enough uranium on earth to replace fossil fuels and fusion reactors are many years away. If we don't use the "gift" that our species has been given to make that transition with, and continue to burn oil, coal and natural gas as usual, it may be too late. Like the residents of Easter Island, who long ago cut down all of their trees, and could not make life rafts or boats to escape the doomed island, we may also find ourselves in a position without the resources necessary to go to "plan B".

   I saw a documentary in which they explained that they have the ability to place technology on the moon that would power the whole planet!
   
   Why haven't they done it? Free energy for all would mean less control, power and money for the greedy ones who currently run the economy.
   
   I changed my energy provider last night. Now I pay for 100% renewable energy. The prices are coming down at last so we can all do something at least.

    Renewable energy can supplement existing fossil fuels but frankly are and always will be a drop in the ocean.
    I developed a renewable fuel to replace heavy fuel oil in power stations back in 2004 and currently ship abt 30,000mt p.a to one UK power station by ocean tanker. I could perhaps increase this to 100,000mt but that would run a 2000mw power station for abt a month.
    We have to change our thinking and forget about burning anything to create power. Wind power is a total and utter waste of time and money. Nuclear power is ok until cold fusion is perfected. Solar power will rely on rare earths and metals from China who will very soon not play anymore - goodbye photovoltic cells, cell phones, lcd tvs etc etc.
    Wave power is about as reliable as wind power. The only reliable souce from the sea is Tidal power or hydrogen extraction. Oil from Algae is fraught with environmental dangers.
    We have to learn to make the most of what we have until science provides an answer to our energy problem.
